Mortgage paid off: Check.
When you own your own home and have paid it off in full, you are not 'underwater' nor even treading water.
You have reached dry land.
30 year mortgage taken out in 1993.
I do not like being in debt to anyone.
Ever.
And I mean that, thoroughly.
